As someone who has lived with a high energy particle physicist for half my life plus someone who's visited CERN, Fermi Labs and of course SLAC, and is familiar with how colliding particles generate data, I am so floored by this strange obsession with the possibility of the LHC generating a black hole. I mean, dude.
Yup. It's one of those panics that leaves me more or less speechless in response; "Dude" is about the best I can manage. If they understand so little, how can they think they understand enough to foresee a danger coming?
Me, at least I know how little I understand. I just accept that the Higgs boson is a cat-particle, and hence incomprehensible by definition.

And yup, at least it leads to some funnies.
