A day of doing stuff
Dec. 23rd, 2008 02:05 pmI lay in bed in the empty hours, remembering all the stuff I had to do, and felt my heart sink catastrophically: wasn't I supposed to be having fun now?
Then I remembered the other thing, that all the stuff I have to do now is fun...
So: I have written a thousand words of aClive Barker tribute album story set in the Hellraiser mythos, for an antho. Hee. At the moment it's all dark Oriental seastuff shopping; soon it gets to be pretty boys and typhoon. After that, who knows...? Cenobites are expected.
I have shopped, and come home with a pig's trotter and clams. Palourdes, carpet-shell clams. Many, many clams, for non-traditional Christmas dinner (steak tartare; spaghetti vongole, with many many vongols; maple cheesecake).
I have pierced an orange with many many cloves, and put the Christmas ham on to boil. I have rummaged in the dustbin for the wrapper that showed the weight of the Christmas ham, to calculate how long it needs (another non-traditional tradition, in this house; I always forget to look, and have to rummage). Four hours, apparently. Coo.
I have not yet split the trotter and set that to boil with herbs & veggies to make the jelly for the capon-and-ham pies; I shall do that after lunch, because I need to keep space on the cooker to heat soup and crisp bacon. To go with my capon, stuffing and cranberry pickle sammich, oh yes. Soup and a sammich: what could be nicer?
Also, I should do some dedicated cleaning this afternoon. I thought that a couple of days ago, and so far I've managed to clear half a kitchen counter. A small kitchen counter. The easy half. Um. It's not impressive.
Oh, and I have to collect my Christmas veggies. And work out what's for dinner. And write some more of the story. And glaze the ham, and make the pies, and and and...
