Okay, I give up. I have cancelled the theatre; I have made myself a hot toddy; I have taken something hot and comforting out of the freezer (I thought it was a curry, but it looks more like chilli as it defrosts, so I have taken the precaution of tossing in half a dozen more red chillies just to be sure). Now I am going to sip toddy and read book in front of a roaring (gas) fire. With or without cats, as they choose. (Barry is currently sitting on a very small piece of polystyrene packaging, because it came out of a box and is therefore clearly in need of sitting on. I think?)

It seems perverse that something hot and comforting should be kept in the freezer.

There is probably an elegant literary figure to be drawn here, something perhaps that marries the notion of potential heat to that of potential energy, stored in coolth and stillness but nonetheless hot at heart? I dunno, I am too sick to contrive it. But true it is, that my freezer is mostly full of hot stuff. Somebody asked me once if I ever cooked without spices; I said of course I did, and was challenged to name a single non-spicy dish that I'd cooked in the last month, and couldn't do it. Actually I think it's an addiction, like exercise can be: all those endorphins buzzing around in the brain, I needs them, I does...

*is perverse*

But at least you're all warm and cosy. What are you reading?

Alternating between "What the Victorians Did For Us" (research/inspiration for steampunk stories) and "The Reverse of the Medal," being about halfway through my reread of the entire Patrick O'Brian corpus.
