It is ... somewhat less than reassuring? ... when you've just been told that your flight will be delayed by ten or fifteen minutes, and the very next second you see a vivid red firetruck racing across the tarmac towards your plane.

Happily, that was only precautionary. As was, perhaps, the wheel-change that occasioned it. One does wonder a little, what it was that made them decide suddenly that they urgently needed to change that wheel, even at the cost of delaying the plane; but it would have felt inappropriate to ask...

Sitting in the hotel foyer this morning, waiting for airport-headed company, I overheard two people complaining about the self-same problem (no hot water in the shower). One was Australian, one was English. One got a refund, one didn't. You can work out which.

I, of course, had had the self-same problem myself, and never mentioned it.

Oh, and one evening I came out of an eating-place murmuring that I must surely have eaten worse food and paid more for it; but looking back, I'm pretty sure I was lying.

And yes, I had a lovely time in Dublin, thank you. And funds permitting, I expect to be going back next year. Heh.

Once, in Egypt, theoretically en route to Abu Simbel, while we passengers were sitting in the airplane, it was announced that our departure would be delayed by ten minutes. I was rather unconvinced, as from my window seat I had an excellent view of the team of men engaging in a thorough disassembly of the port-side engine...

(I never made it to Abu Simbel.)

Heh. Someone was flashing this at the con this weekend; I caught glimpses, but neglected to ask for the URL or any other handy way to find it. Thank you!

That's actually what I thought was happening to us; all I could see was a cluster of men fussing around directly behind an engine. Only then they rolled this vasty tyre over, and I figured out where the wheels were...

My last flight to Seattle (via Las Vegas, for some reason, where it was snowing), we sat on the runway in Vegas for 2 hours and had to be de-iced twice. All I could think was, "but ... what's going to keep us from icing up at 30k feet?"

Ah, Dublin airport. I have spent many hours there. I was snowed in twice, fogbound once but mainly all was smooth. They used to do a very decent ham and turkey sandwich, too...

We didn't mention it either. Shoulda, I guess!

Relative lack of humudity, coupled with air friction causing the wings to be a little warmer than they otherwise would be, making them less likely to collect condensation.

Oh, and de-icing boots, when ice does start to form in flight. (And still, aircraft fall out of the sky because of it.)

In a completely different hotel, [livejournal.com profile] gmh and I were woken half an hour early by our television blaring that the water problem had been fixed, so I suspect there was a general central Dublin water problem going on and the lack of hot water was related to the absence of water to heat up.

Also, it was utterly lovely to finally meet you properly this weekend!

P.S. [livejournal.com profile] gmh's coat sends its love.

Mmm, indeed, Skally and I were in the Paramount, whose heating and water went cold some time on Sunday evening and didn't come back until Monday lunchtime.

(I know you don't have a clue who I am but I just wanted to say we really enjoyed your opinions at the 'rules of writing' panel and are really happy to hear there's a chance you'll be back next year!)

I owe you an apology. I didn't recognise you from your LJ photo, I recognised you from your website photo, which I saw after clicking the link from your LJ profile. *blushes* Sorry.

Lovely indeed it was. [livejournal.com profile] clanwilliam, [livejournal.com profile] gmh and the coat, these three: and the greatest of these is the coat...

Well, I for one hope you will make it for 2010.

Glad you got home safe.
