Like [livejournal.com profile] shewhomust, I have recently had my life immeasurably improved by the constant opportunity to delete returned messages that I did not actually send, on account of my e-dress being spoofed by some blessed spammer.

Given that I can get fifty or more on the trot, I tend to delete them on autopilot (with of course the occasional curse and dive into the trash to rescue a genuine message, when my finger goes one further than it ought). Every now and then, though, one catches my eye; as this evening, where under the usual headers, 'This is the Postfix program' etc etc, 'I am sorry to have to tell you' etc etc, it said 'The following sentences are Japanese.' Which they are. My first thought was, if I'd sent a message in Japanese, do they really think I'd need telling? Wouldn't I know? But I looked again, and it's not the text of the returned message that's in kanji, it's more error-message headers. I like that, that AIs across the globe are talking to each other in many languages in order to return to me a message that I never actually sent.

But now my conscience is troubling me, because [livejournal.com profile] shewhomust quite rightly says that these returned-message messages become a form of spam in themselves; in which case, I'm fairly sure that writing about them becomes a third-level form of spam in itself, and here I am sitting here doing it. Bad Chaz. Go to bed, and wake a better person...

...and, in fact, some spam or viruses disguise themselves as these supposedly returned messages.

"Go to bed, and wake a better person..."

And how did the better person sleeping there appreciate being woken up? :-)

Oh, that was fine, thanks for asking. We're old friends: what else would he be doing in my bed? Asleep?

Well, he's a better person, isn't he? How would I know? I've never met a better person! ^________^

Spammers - kill, slowly, exquisitely, use your imagination - impalement by clockwork attached to a water clock, stake 'em out on the sand and pour a jug of fire ants down their throat . . .

As a rule, I'm agin capital punishment, but for spammers I'm prepared to make an exception.
