Okay, I have an official Darling of the Day.
I do try not to privilege one sentence above another, it seems invidious; or else it suggests that I haven't worked hard enough on those other sentences. Besides which, this has been a slow day, not quite reaching quota, so I'm not privileged to boast about anything.
But, at the back end of a slack afternoon (well, I have all these half-drunk wines that need finishing off, y'know? And there was The Next Karate Kid on TV, and I've never even seen it, and...), comes this:
She felt like a knife: chilled and forged and sharpened, lethal, meant.
And that's it, that's the word. That last word. Sometimes a single word will do it.
Possibly not coincidentally, when I was doing a gig in Tel Aviv someone from the audience asked me why I had such a fixation with knives. That was ten, eleven years ago. Till that time, I'd never realised that I did. Apparently I still do.
And, yup. I do know why. Soon as she asked the question, I knew why. I just hadn't seen it before, because we're like that, us human people. We have layers.
