I have successfully diagnosed the problem with my kitchen sink. I don't know if this is standard or unusual, but there is a two-inch length of plastic pipe-device immediately below the sink. The U-tube assemblage screws up into it. It is attached to the sink above by a single screw that comes down through the drain-hole, screws into the device and thus holds the entire sink/U-tube/waste-pipe structure together.

A single screw that has, in my case, broken.

Okay, I thought. Can't get the dead screw out; easier to replace pipe-device. It's already detached at the top, at the sink end; turning this here twiddly-bit should detach it from the U-tube assemblage, and then I can trot down to a plumbing-supply shop and poke about, and thus commit DIY plumbing and be proud...

Except that the damn' device is also attached to a length of flexible pipe from the sink's overflow, and I can't figure out how to detach it. It doesn't seem to unscrew, it just turns round and round and goes nowhere; and it doesn't want to be pulled off, or I'm just not strong enough to pull it (this is not unlikely; I is feeble man).

And five minutes' worth of twisting and tugging has been enough to provoke my bad shoulder, just an hour before I have a physio session; and I have cut my finger.

Also, the whole U-tube is full of kack, and a little voice is suggesting that while I'm poking about I should probably take that off and clean it out. Think how good I'd feel afterwards; you'd never hear the end of it.
