Good gods, it is bucketing down out there. The back yard is inches deep already; the gutters in the street are too wide to leap (I know this, I have just watched lads trying to leap them, and failing, and getting even wetter). The boys and I are watching out of the windows, awed.

When I was a child, we had an apparently rare thunderstorm in Oxford, and were caught out in it, and my mother described it as a cloudburst: which is an image I've always been fond of and very rarely used since, because it would need to be a preternatural rainstorm to justify it in my mind. This might qualify.
