Ooh, help...

desperanceThere is a drip, coming through my dining-room ceiling.
Quite an active drip.
There is a water-pipe I have discovered, among the joists above the ceiling and below the bedroom floor. I can't get at the bit where the drip is apparently coming from, without shifting bookcases and pulling up the carpet. I could do that, but what would I do then? Perhaps the pipe has burst (tho' it's in the warmest bit of the house, and really shouldn't have); perhaps it's just a leaking joint. Either way, I don't know how to fix it. It's Friday evening; I can dash out and maybe buy sticky plumber's tape before the big DIY store closes? Would that do the job, at least temporarily? Emergency plumbers are ... well, not really within my budget. Especially at night or weekend rates...
Eek. I don't know what to do, beyond putting a very large stockpot underneath to catch the drips. Or turning off the water altogether, I could do that. Should I do that? I don't really know what you guys can do either, but wise and experienced words might help...?
