Well, I guess that's a decision, then. Of a sort.

I have slapped up a first coat of paint over the primed architrave, but no more than that for now. When it's dry, I'll have a look at it, maybe do another. If I go on to the wall, it'll be in a spirit of reckless abandon. Meantime, I revise.

I've had a more careful look at the ceiling, and it's daunting me a little: there's a lot of fancy coving up there, that would take intricate work with a small brush. In these boots? With this neck? I don't think so. Not right now. TENS may be my friend, but there are limits to any friendship.

It occurs to me: I have lived in any number of rooms, flats and houses down the years, and decorated most of them at one point or another. (Not with any great skill, I hasten to add, lest you think I am trying to blind you with my decorative sciences: I'm an efficient wallpaperer - except apparently in my own house, where the broken angles and the damp together humiliate me utterly - but I have no talent with a paintbrush.)["What's a broken angle, Chaz?" Well, take this corner here, in which sits this desk. The two walls don't meet at a rightangle, but that's okay. Nothing in this house is rectangular or anywhere near it. They don't actually meet at the same angle, though, top and bottom: that's less okay. Furthermore, the angle(s) at which they meet are not orthogonal to the floor, let alone the ceiling; again, two slightly different not-quite-rightangles. It's like a slice out of a very very long thin helix, this corner corkscrews. And the plaster is cracked, lumpy and uneven. And I had to accommodate all of that with a single length of wallpaper. Um. Not too successfully, as it happens.]

Anyway. As I was saying, it occurs to me: I have painted many and many a wall, but never before have I painted one white. I'm not at all convinced about it, and may very well slap a colour over later, but at the moment white is what I'm doing. Feels very strange. The immediate target is white-all-over: walls and ceiling and floor too, just to have a look at it, see if it works in the context of a dark hallway and stairs rising into light. I remain to be convinced...
