Courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] rhionnach, I bring you news of a meteorite bearing tidings of a forthcoming Klingon invasion. What fascinates me most, though, is the news contained therein, that "in 2006 the Guinness Book of Records confirmed that Klingon had overtaken Esperanto to become the most widely spoken constructed language."

I did not know this! And am, to be frank, a little shaken. I love the joke of Klingon, but I love more the actuality of Esperanto. Damnit, I have a whole novel I want to write: it's called "Desperanto", and is about a post-communist country emerging blinking from the Iron Curtain, to find that it holds two different ethnicities with two different languages neither of whom will allow the other to become the recognised tongue of this new country. Hence it becomes the first country in the world to adopt Esperanto as its official language; and of course nobody there actually speaks Esperanto, so it becomes a draw for all of those who do, guaranteed work...

So on, so forth. I pitched it at an editor once, who said "Chaz, it sounds enormous fun to write, and enormously difficult to sell," and that was that, kinda. But I still cling to the notion. And it wouldn't be the same in Klingon.
