I have cleared one corner of the coffee-table! One whole corner! Of books stacked three dozen deep!!
All these loose books are still clad in the dust of ages, 'cos the kids felt they were running out of time and clearing shelves took priority over dusting. I am scrupulously dusting them before they go back onto a shelf, then. Which is a little wheezy-making, tho' I take regular breaks; but it also supplies incidental pleasures, because I get to read every individual title. Some are old friends, some I didn't know I had, some I have simply never heard of; all of those are intrinsically pleasurable responses. And then there's the simple pleasure of the well-turned title: Everything that Rises Must Converge, A Cure for Serpents, Village Bells: Sound and Meaning in the 19th Century French Countryside. All on the same shelf, for now.
