Further to this: should they also get the pate for which I now have neither appetite nor bread, given that Mac has finally figured out how to get into the bread-bin and eat the bread? Or would that be to reward vice...?

Every time you feed a cat anything, the likelihood is that you're rewarding vice, whether or not you know yet what specific wickedness has been perpetrated. I say give them the pate.
