Actually, what I think I love best is not the giddy whirling, it's the baffled alertness after the evil red dot disappears. It's like popping soap bubbles: he completely doesn't understand where it's gone, he's sure it's hiding somewhere and he wants it back, he hasn't finished playing yet.

Both my cats do that. Mr. Mumford will spin in skuttling circles and Cinnamon goes on the hunt. At first she (Cinnamon) was baffled because she couldn't smell it, but then she realised "red dot! fun!" and will climb walls and dip her paw in water for it.
