As we know, Jim, I am not commonly a breakfast-eating man. It's a pity, because I do thoroughly approve the notion of a whole nother meal in the day, a new range of dishes and Things To Cook. Also it's a craft I should develop, because Karen is a breakfast-eating woman. I just, y'know. Don't much want to eat, first thing.
This morning, however, I did. I'm working my sourdough starter back up to potency after a two-month lay-off, and either you throw away a lot of semi-active starter along the way or else you make a lot of bread. I am not much of a one for throwing things away. So I made this loaf, and it does need eating; and somewhere in the cold dark reaches of the night I persuaded myself that a bacon sarnie would be a good and useful way to start the day.
So I put the bacon in the pan and sizzle sizzle; I sliced the bread, and was spreading it with apple butter when Mac came a-begging. He was all scrabble-scrabble at the chopping-board where I was working - so I gave him some apple butter.
