In which once again we lose our entire morning to telling people in the UK that they are being stupid. With my money. When did writing business letters cease to be a practical way of doing business...?

Harrumph.

A major international banking and finance house has just written to tell me that they propose to begin taking direct debit payments on 01/01/1900. *waves to the extreme past* [A quick check of my current balance confirms that they have not in fact done this; I abide in hopes that they will not recalculate what I owe from that date, and add interest on top.]

And another arm of that same house continues to accuse me of things that are not true, and to demand answers to questions that I have answered three times already. I don't in fact believe that three international letters have all successively gone astray, at least not before they reached the building they were sent to; nevertheless, it is clearly time to try another avenue. And they don't do e-mail [HOW CAN A MAJOR INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS NOT DO E-MAIL?], so I shall find a Fedex office and send a fax.

Aaargh.

Check into fax software for your computer---as a Mac user I can fax a pdf using an option in the print dialog. Saves a ton of trouble!

Scan or take a good b/w photo of your signature to paste into such documents.

I have found banking/finance organisations to be the only ones in the UK still using faxes. Their staff always seem baffled about the rest of the world not owning fax machines.

I have also found that in such organisations denying receipt of correspondence now seems a common approach to any dispute, or problem requiring them to take action. Recorded delivery is the solution. Can you post to a UK person who is willing to forward via recorded/special delivery? Or are there affordable international-signed-for options?
