I had such a lovely day yesterday. In the morning, I read Stalky & Co, which you are please to remember always to call research (I'm writing about Kipling! How could it not be research?). Then [livejournal.com profile] jeanvieve and Julie (who as far as I know is not on LJ) came and took me away. We went to Penzey's, aka Spices'R'Us. And spices indeed were they. I was abstemious: I merely bought five kinds of pepper (two paprikas, one dried chilli, Aleppo and Szechuan peppers) (and ever since I came home, I've been listing other things I need to go back for: sumac! How could I have missed the sumac? Or the zahtar? Or, or, or...).

Then we went to the mall and shopped for a pretty cocktail dress (for Julie, since you ask), and found a lovely example of that ilk; and we also found foodie shops, and bought foods: pork ribs and marinated sea bass (and lamb's kidneys for the freezer, for meeee; they're the first I've seen in America). And so home, and I fired up the barbecue (in January! it's too cold to hang around in the yard after sundown, but plenty warm enough to duck in and out and do cooking) and grilled same under Jeannie's auspicious eye. And we may have drunk some wines and done talking until talking (and wines) were done.

So, yeah. Reading and shopping and cooking: these are a few of my favourite things.

In other news, Jeannie bought a new espresso machine, and has gifted me her old one. I CAN SEE NO WAY IN WHICH THIS CAN POSSIBLY GO WRONG.
