Friday five
Mar. 29th, 2013 12:26 pm1) Oh, but it is lovely out there. Warmy-warm-warm with a side of warmliness, like heated honey poured over the skin. We have endured the winter* and this is our reward. I could live here, y'know. I really could.
2) It was way too lovely to stay in, so I walked downtown (as is my habit, actually) and spent an hour in the Palace Cafe. Where the coffee is not so good, but it's almost always quiet enough that I can get a window-table and work comfortably. Today there were tedious people at the next table over trying to woo each other with the finances of a medical franchise, but they went away eventually.
3) I have ordered two books about Kipling: one regular biography, one specifically about his influence on Imperial thought and policy. Obviously I have the excuse of work - I'm writing about the man, for cryin' out loud! on Mars! - but really this is just to feed my fascination.
[3b) In the UK I'd have gone to the Lit & Phil for both 2) and 3); here I still haven't joined the Mechanics' Institute, which is or should be my obvious substition-library. I dunno: I love going up to the city, but I almost never do it. It's not walking distance, y'know? It's not even biking distance. The train's fine, but it costs money and eats time. I just get more done if I stay home, even though Sunnyvale is, well. Not San Francisco.]
4) The house three doors down the street is for sale. We're trying to persuade Julie to buy it. It would be sweet, to install a friend as neighbour. She could join our bike gang and everything.
5) Karen's working from home today. As soon as she's ready we're going to bike downtown for lunch. This is awesome.
[5b) I am learning to say "awesome". Did I do it right?]
*What? There were days I had to wear a long-sleeved shirt and everything.
