So here I am reading through The Garden (Brenchley, 1990), and mostly I am just cheerfully amused by its datedness - people smoked! indoors! and listened to cassette tapes! and called each other "well sussed", and broke the law if they were gay and having sex under the age of twenty-one!
But I just encountered a receptionist who turns her attention back to her VDU, and I dunno. Kids today, I suspect they will have no clue. Should I update that, should I say monitor instead? Simply for the sake of clarity, of not dumping people out of the story with a string of initials they don't recognise? (I'd do it like a shot, except that it's thin-end-of-the-wedge territory, and if I change that then maybe I should change this, and this, and this too...)
