It is a fact of almost inarguable proportions that if you cycle to the library with a backpack full of laptop and a mind full of story, and get there and put your bike in the rack and remember just as you do so that the bike locks are still sitting on the sideboard back at home, there is actually nothing you can do but get on the bike again and cycle homeward, angel.

And it's way late to pick up the locks and head out again, I was running behind in any case; so I have abandoned all such notions and am scrolling upwards through the ball-by-ball of today's epic encounter between England and that other place at cricket. At some point I'll break off to stroll around the corner and buy spinach for my beloved's lunchtime salad. And that will be my morning, and I will have done nothing that wakes.
