So neither cat came to bed last night, at least as far as I'm aware. I got up once, to replace the lid of the kitchen bin which had boinged like a gong when they knocked it off. When he knocked it off, I should say, Mac; I'm sure it was him. I have a metal kitchen bin largely because Barry used to pull the old plastic one over; Barry's never shifted the new one. Mac brings other skills to the task, I guess. Maybe a second braincell.

Otherwise, there was much thundering of paws on stairs, and like that. It's Mac who chases Barry, almost always. Poor Baz just can't get the hang of this. A fiendish beast assaults him: what else is he going to do, but run away? This morning he was peering out from one of his best hidey-holes, behind a bookcase; Mac lay in wait around the corner. If Baz would only clout him a time or two, that would settle his hash, but no. Baz seems not to have the clouting, except with me.

Meanwhile, ridiculous novella has grown again:

If the ostensible end-point moves once more, it won't be a novella any more, it'll be a short novel. Which would be absurd, it hasn't got half enough plot to sustain that length. I will cut it, I swear I will; but not till I get to the end. Wherever that may be. And of course only if I think it's worth the effort. It might be the most monstrous heap of crap, after all this.

Y'know, if your cats are going to chase each other violently round your bookcases, you'd maybe better give urgent consideration to whether they can be stabilised (the bookcases, not the cats; either would do, but I suspect only one is possible...).

New bookcases are in train! Or will be, if I can only solve the problems of collection and delivery. I'm inheriting the Lit & Phil's old metal shelving, which will be inherently much more stable. Ideally, they'd like me to collect it (disassembled, fortunately) on Saturday afternoon. Alas, I'm in Derby (http://www.derby.gov.uk/LeisureCulture/ArtsEntertainment/altfiction.htm) on Saturday afternoon. Nothing is ever simple, y'know...?
