I was going to write this long & happy post about Alt:Fiction in Derby, back from which I have just come: how I met nice people and had a nice time and all of that; and then I was meaning to move on to be cheerful about the cats, and how we had all had tea & cake (they both like my fruit cake, nom d'un nom! - and Mac likes to fish dead tealeaves out of the pot and eat them. I only interrupted when he started to stick his head into the pot - you should understand, none of my teapots have lids, because I break them - and I saw how he was folding his ears back to get them through, and I thought "he's never going to get out again", which may have been paranoid, but it could also be paranoid and true). And so on.

Instead, I have only to report that bloody Mac has this habit of springing lightly from the floor onto the desk here, and it can now be asserted that he also has the habit of spilling a full glass of wine all over everything, because he has now done it twice. 'Everything' in this context includes that little pile of floppy disks that I had made, old texts that I might want to recover, that I have no copies of except on those old floppies. Whether spilled wine will prevent their recovery, I do not know; they are currently drying in a sandwich of paper towels, and we will see. Snarl...

just enquired of some geeks on irc, and they suggest rinsing under the *cold* tap first, crack open the case to let it dry properly, then reassemble:

run under the tap and let dry for a few days.

if necesary, crack the case to aid drying, then reassemble t pull off data
rinse

you might have to crack it open while drying - there's stuff inside which will absorb water

rinse, crack, dry, salvage

rinse in *cold* water

Thanks... You couldn't ask 'em for best advice on how to clean a keyboard, could you? Wine musta got under the keys, and of course it's the bloody return key that's not working. I don't know if there's any way to pop the keys off, or whether they'd ever go back on again if I tried...

Somebody did the "spill cola on keyboard" thing last week. I can try to find the relevant bit of archive, but from memory, the usual thing with sugary drinks is to unplug the keyboard, and either rinse it thoroughly under the cold tap or put it in the dishwasher in the delicates rack and on the gentle cycle, and then let it dry for several days.

Sugary drinks are the real problem, because they leave a sticky residue which then attracts dust (and small vermin), which can cause problems. Wine might be the same.

Thanks! Not having a dishwasher, I'll try the rinsing thing (tho' I guess I shoulda done that straight away, and not let the bloody stuff dry; but it seemed to be working okay, so of course I did nothing...).

This is, of course, assuming that you have a separate keyboard, and it's not the built-in on a laptop...

Further note -- take the case off if possible, and clean it as quickly as possible --
"the big problem is if liquids have gotton onto the conductive membrane, they can corrode the tracks quite quickly"

I own only plastic tumblers and lowball glasses, thanks to Lju and Barry's fascination with glasses as kittens. They managed to break every glass glass I owned at the time. They grew out of it.
