Late last night - late enough, at least, that I preferred to go to bed rather than post my triumph there and then - I finished the endless unfinishable SF novella, I did. Well, for values of 'finished' that just about cover 'got to the end of the first chaotic draft'. See:

Zokutou word meter

Also I built and half-filled another shelving unit, and developed a viable strategy (I think) for the long wall (where I cannot reasonably do what the system expects, bolting four units together - twelve-by-seven of steel sheet shelving is too much for mortal man to manage on his own, besides the danger of cats getting squashed or trapped while helping).

Also, it's far too early to reach any conclusions, but I think a worm may be turning; the boys did a lot of chasing-about yesterday, and most of the times I actually saw 'em, rather than simply hearing the thunder of tiny paws in other parts of the house, it was Barry chasing Mac. Also-also, the couple of times they did the pounce-wrestle-I-am-going-to-gnaw-your-throat-out-and-disembowel-you thing, it was very mutual and apparently consensual and there were no shrieks of pain; I venture to hope that they were having fun. But then I am, as we know, an eternal optimist.

Congratulations on finishing your novel, and good luck with polishing and editing it!

Oh excellent! Congratulations and hoorahs all round! And yay! More Chazzy goodness to read!

And it's also good that the moggies seem to be getting on now. And also the bookshelving situation is a thing of goodness.

Congratulations! On all of it.

If you can achieve cats that get along, you're doing something right.

Mazel tov on finishing the draft!

Although you're going to have to trim some words to makeit a novella. It's technically (for awards purposes and all) a novel since it's over 40,000...

I know - though I think those technicalities could be revisited; 40K is far too short to count as any kind of novel these days, and a lot of books sold as novellas are certainly over that length - but anyway, I will be cutting. There must be cutability, especially in the early pages; the real plot doesn't engage until p 80 or thereabouts (of 125). 'Twas ever thus in my fiction, but this is an extreme example.

Since mine never get to page 30, I suffer from the opposite problem.

Firstly - Congrats on "finishing"!

Let's see at about 44K, would that then qualify as a "cute little story"? {EG}

Cut? Did you say CUT? Noooooo... must make it LOOOONNNNNGER! ;-D

It has been my experience that my first rewrite usually adds about 20% to 40% to the original. "No Credit" (WT) started at about 57K and R2 is now about 88K, an increase of 54% over the original size, and I'm beginning line edits. The collaboration Lynn Ernest and I are working on ("Alternate Awareness") also started at about 57K and is now (R5.2) about 87K.

Happy writing!

Congrats on finishing the novella!

It often takes cats 3-4 months to re-calibrate a new member of the family, so I think your boys are doing remarkably well.

Not till I've been through it once; as it stands, the beginning doesn't match the end. At all.
