...is now 400 pages. 127,000 words. And I am not within any sight of the ending. Just coming off the back straight, perhaps: better than halfway, yes, but with that endless final bend before I can hope to look for the finishing line, and even then it'll be a sprint away. [/sporting metaphor]

It's a balrog. And I am tired already.

See if it breaks handily anywhere, at a good cliffhanger, and call that Book 1, and look for other good stopping points in the plot you have outlined so far...

Alas, this is already Book 1; it needs to be a trilogy, 'cos I have three titles (no other reason, obviously). And the other two are already spoken for, by Future Events, so I really can't make it into a tetralogy-or-worse.

Also - trust me - the problem is not an excess of plot, only of words.
