But-but-but, you cry; what-what-what? What is this? Why are you at home, and posting numbers, when you are supposed to be in Chesterfield, gigging?

The answer, dear reader, is that I went to Chesterfield, I did; and went to the venue, and found that the gig was cancelled. And so I came home again.

I did at least work on the train down, which is why I can post pages. 550! Yay!

Didn't work coming back. Was too busy fuming. I think this may be the first time this has happened to me, that a venue cancels a gig because of poor bookings. 'Specially for literary events, where people are far more prone just to turn up. It's nice to be home, but I am kinda snarling, its being about eight hours snatched pointlessly from my day.

Still, the cats are pleased to see me home. They got extra-special second tea, and can't quite believe their luck.

What, they let it run right up to too late to stop you setting off and then cancelled? Oh, that's not good enough.

Whoa, they couldn't tell you in advance that they were cancelling? (nevermind that lots of folks for readings & things just show up, like you said) That's terrible! I'm sorry your time was so wasted.

I'd be spreading the word about that little organisation.

Chesterfield is a long way to go at the best of times, but just to be cancelled . . . Probably a good thing you didn't take and dolls and pins with you.

That is inexcusable. Did you speak to anybody at the venue? Or was it just doors barred and nobody at home? I trust you will bill them not only expenses but also the sales lost from the missed opportunity to sell.

But did you have to do that to the church spire on you way out in a fit of pique?

Anyhow, folk are travelling up from London for your gig in Newcastle on Sunday.

Indeed, I had a long conversation with she-who-had-chosen-to-cancel. The annoying thing is, it's not her I have to bill for exps etc: it's the nice people who I like, who had arranged to use her venue. She just wasn't prepared to keep it open (staff! electrics!) if there was a chance that nobody would come.

And phooey, it's only a little twist. And it's not like they were using the spire anyway. What's a spire for? Except to qualify you (if twisted) to join the Association for Twisted Spires of Europe. [You think I've made that up, but I promise not. Tragically, it doesn't seem to have a website; but it does have 72 members, all across the continent...]

Travelling from London? For ten minutes of me? Are they mad? Who are they? What shall I read...?

Whereas I never come further south than - well, then Henley-on-Thames, actually. (Kinda loses its punch, doesn't it...?)

...Whereas Yorkshire, of course, is the Midlands from where I sit. There are whole counties between me and Yorkshire...

They are on your Friends list, and mine, so perhaps they should answer these questions. Though if I had to, it would be yes, yes, no, wait and see, your call.

What shall I read...?

Can you read from the surely-it'll-be-finished-by-then-hooray! novel, or is it too pseudonymously secret? We surely ought to celebrate the end of the death march...
