Or 555 in Roman numerals, which is nicely satisfying. Quintuple-Nelson: it must be significant of something, if only catastrophic failure.

But I'm afraid that's going to be it, for today. That and an e-mail interview for the Metro freebie newspaper about my play (eek! Next week! Weds & Thurs at the Customs House, if you're close enough to make it, and then on tour the week after to Sunderland, Dipton and Stockton), and a morning in town, and I'm tired...

*goes off to slump with book or TV or whatever*

*doesn't care*

We're going to be on holiday up in your part of the world from Saturday onwards, but I can't find anything about your play with a quick Googling of 'Customs House, Newcastle', can you give me some more pointers as we'd love to come along and be cheerleaders (pom-poms optional) for you.

Aha! What you need to google is "Customs House, South Shields", 'cos they like to pretend they're not really Newcastle at all...

(Well, to be fair, they're really not, being the other side of the river and right down by the coast, it's ten miles from Newcastle proper. But easy of access from the city, just a short Metro ride if you can't be bothered to drive. And it would be completely lovely if you came...)

:-)

Thank you. We're not staying in Newcastle, we're going to be in Alnwick, but compared to where we usually are it's practically next door still.

'Deed it is. And Alnwick's lovely in its own right, and of course home to the best second-hand bookstore in the country (that's Barter Books, in the old railway station, should you need telling. If BB is not in fact sole purpose of visit...).

I didn't actually know about Barter Books, but on the map that came with directions to the place we're staying there seems to be a place called Barter Books on the corner of the road.

I think it might be a good job I have a large car...

Barter Books is a joy. (http://www.barterbooks.co.uk/) Compendious, it is. And occasionally witty. And there are model steam-trains running around above your head. And a waiting-room with a real live fire in winter, just like railway stations used to have when I was a kidling. And many, many, many books...

I wonder if I should fit a roof-rack to the car as well, just in case ...

Barter Books is well worth a visit, even just for a look round. Their prices are on the high side, so it's well worth considering if you have any books you want to barter.

Thanks for the tip. I tend to mainly buy art/art history books from places like that, but I'm sure I have some here that are unloved and could go to a new home.

PS - if you're at a loose end sometime in the week, d'you want to do Chaz'z Tour of Newcastle? (Be aware, this can involve Art, and it can involve Public Houses...)

That's assuming I've finished my novel, of course, and am free of the death-march and other obligations.

Oooh, yes please, that would be mighty fine indeed.

We're around Saturday - Saturday and have nothing in the way of fixed plans at all so far. Art and Public Houses are a great and noble combination, provided you get the proportions right at least, I find.

Excellent! If you email me privately - chaz at chazbrenchley dot co dot uk - we could exchange those telephony-number things that people get so keen on, for making arrangements through...

Quintuple Nelson. Now it would be fun to see David Shepherd's reaction to that (the umpire, not the bishop)

Quintuple Nelson! That's Nelson without 5 eyes, 5 arms and 5 legs, yes? A 5-eyed (etc) Nelson seems very Lovecraftian in a particularly English way.

Congrats for getting on so far; and I hope the play is a roaring success. I wish I still lived in the North East (the Hub of the Universe) so I could see it.
