So for years, nay, decades I have had a cardinal rule: I don't do schools and I don't do prisons. Anywhere the inmates don't want to be, anywhere they don't get a choice whether or not they get to hear me, I don't speak. I'm not interested in compulsion; I want to be reassured that everyone in the audience actually wants to be there. Whether I can give them what they want to hear, that's another matter, but the primary rule is absolute.

Apparently there are contingencies of absolute. Absolution? Today, I talked to a creative writing class of schoolkids.

Well, technically they were college kids - but it's a Middle College for the kids not doing well in high school, they were 16 - 18, which makes it a school by my definition. I learned in the lift that this class was by way of being a compulsory elective - and I went on up anyway, because by then, what else could I do?

I seem more or less to have talked at them for an hour and a half. I think we had fun. I did, anyway. They were bright, engaged, interesting; I'd kind of like to follow up, tho' I don't suppose I'll have the chance.

Still standing by my rule, though. No schools, no prisons - except when I do.

In other news, I really just want to get drunk now, but I have words to write and then a costume consultation re the wedding. I don't do dressing up, either - except, apparently, when I do.

In other news, Karen took me to meet the extraordinary woman who is building our clothes for the wedding. We talked, she sketched - and yup. This wedding? Is really about the clothes. They are going to be gorgeous. K says I am a closet clothes horse, and she may be right. I yearn for that tail-coat, and all that comes with it.
