I was going to post a photograph, illustrative of the subject line; it would have shown you three members of this household all taking a well-earned rest in the same scrap of sun, Mac in the window and Baz on the floor and Dymphna angled up the wall. Only as soon as he saw the camera, of course Mac had to move, and the moment was spoiled. It's like Lucy snatching the ball away; he exists to lure me into spotting opportunities which he then destroys.

Actually, I spent much of the morning in another kind of domestic bliss, setting the kitchen straight. I had the traditional motive - the cleaners were coming! - but there is a curious satisfaction in ordering my workspace, especially after a degree of self-indulgence last night (spice-marinated roast chicken, channa dal and coconut rice, since you ask). I need a better solution to my spice cupboard, though. Further experiment is called for. And investment, that too.

A little before twelve, the cleaners came. I should already have fled, but I was awaiting pick-up; Cliff came, to whisk me away to the SETI Institute for this week's talk (Andrei Linde, on the inflationary multiverse). I am loving this series of talks; it's kind of like having a BBC documentary series acted out in front of you. I miss BBC documentaries - but this is little to do with my emigration. I was missing BBC documentaries long before I left UK shores. There seem to have been precious few in recent years of any value. When I speak of documentaries, I do not mean pretty faces talking down. They used to stretch me, but they used to make me feel for an hour that I actually understood high-level physics. I valued that; and here, I have it again. Ask me about the multiverse, and I will tell you that language is post-inflationary. Actually I should have said that to Professor Linde, I think he would have agreed with me exactly.

Anyway: SETI, and then curry-for-lunch. I seem to be all about the spicings at the moment. If I thought Karen would sit still for it, I'd cook curries for the rest of the week.

Tonight, we'll eat hot dogs. We're going to the movies. It's probably unfortunate that I haven't seen part two of the trilogy, but hey. I am unserious about movies in any case.
