Ever-increasing circles
Jul. 17th, 2006 04:02 pmI do, it is true, have too many fingers in too many pies. Ouch, sore fingers, and probably smaller benefits than might otherwise accrue; I cannot grasp whole handfuls of anything.
Still, it's interesting. As, for example, I belong to two authors' groups, both set up with the same aim in mind, to raise our profiles and thus keep our heads above water. One is Murder Squad, first among equals (by virtue of being first on the planet, we believe), set up about six years ago; the other is The Write Fantastic, a far newer venture, now into our second year of operation.
What's fascinating is how very different these two groups are, despite having one member in common and operating in very much the same market for very much the same purpose. MSq is kind of product-driven: we've produced a book of stories and a CD, as well as the necessary brochures and so forth. TWF's praxis is much more about information and networking; we had a London launch party where MSq just got straight into the gigging, TWF has a MySpace profile and so now do half its members, we'll be launching an LJ community blog as soon as we can get it set up.
In anticipation of which, I just wanted to point out that m'friend'n'colleague Juliet E McKenna is now
jemck, and keeping her own journal at that location. Fellow TWFer Jessica Rydill was here already, at
glass_mountain (tho' beware, she does talk some about dolls; I'm going to strike back at any moment, by setting up a MySpace profile for my teddy bear).
