You should try scaffolding... As an older kitten, Iskander thought our builders were supplied just to amuse him and he certainly made the best of them. They still have scars, apparently.
Have you considered marketing a range of flat-pack shelving as a cat gym/toy? I'm sure there's a market. ('Chaz's Kitty Climbing Circus: keep fit and keep books for cats and their people.')

Cat owners are completely responsible for bookcase companies including an anchor system in their packages now. No, it has nothing to do with toddlers. It was cats!

Hee. How high did he get...? (My boys have advantages, there's a progression from chair to filing cabinet to redundant monitor to shelf-top; but their tails brush the ceiling when they're up there. And they can pull the wallpaper off from the top down, that's fun...)

nearly to the top... then fell off, scattering the pile of books all over the floor.

At least they now have outside as a playground (but this just gives us headless rats).
