A tad more mightiness

Okay, done that too: TextMaker is loaded into Linux and set up to run. Not, again, without a hint of hassle, because - although they both run KDE as the graphical front-end - nothing in Mepis is quite the same as OpenSuse, and I had to figure stuff out a bit. Finding how to open a terminal? Really shouldn't be hard. Isn't hard, but you have to know where to look. Like that.

Also, I have demonstrated to my own entire satisfaction that I really want a little mouse I can plug in somewhere. Touchpads are all very well as a fallback, but they make my arm ache. And are slow and awkward by comparison, and besides, this particular touchpad seems to be hypersensitive, or else I'm accidentally pressing things I didn't quite realise or intend; I keep having things happen that I didn't mean to ask for.

Also, oh you who are accustomed to touchpads: is there a touchpad-and-button equivalent to the scrollwheel on a mouse? It's a feature I've grown fond of, and I find I miss it...

Also, I have now unplugged the LHP and closed its lid in a spirit of scientific experiment, to see what Mepis has in the way of power-saving automatic shutdown systems. Thus far - it's been about ten minutes, I think - it has blanked the screen, but not done anything else. We'll see...

You can usually use the right-hand side of the touchpad as a scrollwheel. Sort of lovingly stroke your finger vertically up and down the right edge of the pad. :)

See, I think this is why I asked, because I think that kept happening accidentally, but I couldn't quite work out what I'd done or how to replicate it...

A handy hint I only discovered the other day -- if you have a file manager window open in KDE, pressing F4 opens a terminal in that directory.

I like TextMaker, in and of itself, but sadly, its attempts to save and load files in Open Document Format are atrocious. I did complain to them about this, and a couple of months later they wrote back to say they'd fixed the problems -- in the Windows version. *sigh*

And yup, I have also grumbled at the nice TextMaker people, and been told things have been fixed in the Windows version. I suppose it's no surprise that that's their first port of call, and the fixes do make their way through eventually to Linux. Like the new versions do make their way through, eventually. I just like the program for working in (it's so fast!), and then when I have to share files they always have to be in Word doc format 'cos that's what publishers understand, which TM does fine, so...

Running my finger down the right side of my touchpad works, or on some laptops it's running two fingers down the pad.
