Good though it is with numbers, my watch will not actually tell me how many words I've written today; therefore there is no point my looking at it, when I am away from the computer and wondering this thing.

Also and similarly, fine keys though they are, my house-keys will not actually admit me to the Lit & Phil, therefore there is no point my taking them out of my pocket as I approach its door.

In Montreal one shows/swipes one's monthly transit pass to get into the Metro, and not at any time thereafter on the journey. I have lived in Montreal for more than six years, and I still find myself taking the thing out when I am getting off the Metro out of entirely irrelevant London reflex, despite using the London Underground being a thing I did maybe one weekend a month or two for the couple of years I last lived in Cambridge.

I also frequently try to open the office door with my home key, no matter how many times it fails to work.

I have tried to open my house door with a swipe card before now.

You need a SonyEricsson MBW100 (http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/28/sony-ericssons-mbw-100-bluetooth-watch-reviewed/) watch then!

It connects to your phone via bluetooth and you can have your PC text you the word count and have it appear on the watch :-)

But I understand entirely!

See, I just knew there would be a gadget... (But I don't have a phone, so I don't think this is the one for me.)

It's been several years since my workplace switched from metal keys to plastic cards and boxes that beep, but I still find myself reaching into my pocket for the keys as I approach the door more often than not. (The card lives in my waist pouch, and will work its beepy magic without actually coming out.)

Now that's neat.

The best similar thing I have actually witnessed was Rorey getting back from a long walk, taking his car keys out the rucksack lid pocket, pointing them at the tent and going CLICK -- then looking puzzled when the tent failed to unzip itself for him...
