I am safely returned from far Macclesfield, where I had one of those strange gigs talking to both students and staff of the College and you never know quite how to pitch it, because of course the teenagers look bored as shit even if they're not, and of course the staff laugh and are enthusiastic and ask interested questions even if they're bored as shit...

But I sold a few books after, which is always good as a barometer; and I'd written a couple of pages on the way down until the train got too busy, and then it just became a reading day. A prolonged reading day, 'cos the same trains that took three hours on the way down were universally crap and took four and a half hours on the way home.

Among the post waiting for me at home was a Risk Assessment form for a Write Fantastic event in the autumn, that I'm supposed to fill out, but I have Absolutely No Idea how to begin. Hey-ho.

Risk Assessment? On the grounds that a gathering of fantasy writers is liable to be harassed by hordes, dragooned by dragons and ogled by ogres?

Yip. "What are the chances of electrocution?" and so forth. With estimates of both risk and hazard (which are apparently different things), on a scale of one to five. I am finding it ... difficult to take seriously.
