Another day, another dollar
Jun. 2nd, 2008 01:45 pmAs I foretold thee, I did start the new novel yesterday. Five pages then, another four so far today; if I can keep up an average of five a day, I'll have a draft in three months, more or less. Which would be ideal. And is of course impossible. I have been dreaming of the three-month novel for lo, these many moons. Moons of moons. Actually I'll be lucky to have a workable draft in six months. I'd settle for that, gladly.
Still, I've signed up for novel-in-90 again, and we will see what we will see.
In other news, I am clearing out the cupboard under the stairs. This is like the centre of the spiral, the core of the house; it is something of a black hole, and I entertain the notion that if I can clear it in a drain-clearing kind of way, then it will work kind of like a black hole or a drain, and suck a load of loose clutter into it, with benefits that can be felt all through the house. It's sort of Step One in the sort-your-life-out project, the thing that has to happen before anything else can happen, because every other move depends on this move first.
The boys are helping. Lots.
In other other news, lunch today is roasted carrot and butternut squash soup. Made with chicken stock and flavoured with mint and coriander but mostly mint, and served with a dash of cream. It is heating as we speak, and is intensely gorgeous.
[Exit, nom-nom-nomming]

Date: 2008-06-03 07:22 am (UTC)The community is all about mutual effort: you report your daily total, get cheered if you're over quota and mocked (gently but imaginatively) if you're short. Me, I find that simply knowing I have to report in at the end of the day is a great encourager for that regular day-to-day effort, especially through the endless middle of a book; and chartable progress is always good.
Might it help stuck people? Depends in what way you're stuck. If you're stuck for an idea, then probably not; you clearly need to bring an active project to the community. If you're stuck in the sense of bogged down, if life is clagging up your writing-wheels - then yes, I think it does help. It becomes a priority, but actually 750 words is not so much if there are other calls on your time, and that feeling of accomplishment, "I've done my words, now I can give my attention to the other stuff," is invaluable.

Date: 2008-06-04 12:26 am (UTC)I have signed up for novel_in_90, though I feel quite apprehensive. But 750 words a day does seem like an achievable goal, and the community itself seems like a big incentive to get the pen - or the computer! - out.
