Oh, glory. Lack of. The BBC is making a Merlin series. Presumably to hook in the Dr Who viewers, in his absence or regeneration or whatever it is.

I just saw a trailer. It looks... abysmal? Worse than Robin Hood?

I suppose I should be celebrating: something else I don't have to watch.

Well, there was the implication one of the last Seventh Doctor episodes that Merlin was the Thirteenth Doctor.

We note that Merlin is young and cute with good cheekbones. A slight difference from Sam Neill, the last Merlin we saw (although it had nothing to do with Malory).

What we need is someone to do a mini-series based on Mary Stewart's The Crystal Cave, bu they won't because it doesn't provide sufficient opportunity for award-winning CGI nonsense.

Is it *possible* for something to look worse than Robin Hood?

One suspects that it is.

Whatever happened to you, Beeb? I seem to recall you used to have something like standards. Now you have Robin Hood, and headlines that say things like, "Mortgages to reduce by 25%".

*mourns*

They've been showing the trailer in the cinema for a couple of weeks. It does look awful.

I thought Robin Hood looked kind of all right from its trailers. Y'know, in a very American/Torchwood kind of way.

But Merlin should be better. The lead has a charming smile, Anthony Stewart Head looks to appear, and there's a ruggedly handsome young Arthur.

At least, she said glumly, you won't have to field questions about it for however long it runs. And be asked to be on panels about it.
Sometimes I really really hate being a Celticist.

Hee. Is true. I am known as one who hates the whole Arthur thing, in perpetuity. Even Guy Gavriel Kay, who is my touchstone: when Arthur comes punting into The Fionavar Tapestry, I screamed, I did. What the hell was he doing there? Why did Guy think he couldn't manage an avowedly post-Tolkien fantasy without Arthur too...?

One of these days we are going to have to have a conversation on the 'And another thing I hate about Arthur is....' theme. There are not words to express how I feel about Arthurian stuff (apart from a very very select handful of books).
I too screamed at Arthur in the Fionavar tapestry. But not as hard as I laughed at the Great Celtic Scholar and his huge audience (I was trained by the greatest living Celtic scholar at the time Kay was writing. Huge audiences don't happen). Oh, and then there's prince aircraft component. (Aileron.)

Yeah, I saw an episode of that new Robin Hood series, and it was terrible. I couldn't believe how bad it was.

Robin of Sherwood was sooooooo much better.

The pretty boy Merlin I can take. The bewigged Richard Wilson I can take. The coyness of it all, I could probably take.

A dragon miming to Sean Connery in Dragonslayer, no . . . just . . . no.
