These were mostly snatched in a couple of minutes while The Other Guy in the Silence Room had slipped out to get a coffee, so they're not great photos (besides which, I do not yet take great photos), but for those of you who are curious about the Lit & Phil, here's the doorway:

and the entrance hall:

Now we go down the stairs at the back, where I'm not allowed to take you:

Past Trotter Brockett, whom we love:

Shh...

Honestly, some of the books in here are so loud, we have to gag them:

Passing through the door, we find...

...the Laptop of Heavenly Perfection, doing its thing!

Ooooh... That's lovely!

But someone should donate some Victorian library ladders. The kind that fold cunningly to make a long mast-type thing, then flip open even more cunningly to make a ladder.

What a splendid environment being put to good use. Trotter Brockett looks as though he would approve.

You sit at the central table? Where people can look at you type? You're brave.

Oh, man.

I wish I had one of those.

(Well, technically, I suppose I do. But one is discouraged from working in the Long Room because of the constant parade of tourists and the absence of desks. :P)

It's very beautiful.

Those chairs look uncomfortable though. I would have to take a cushion.

Self-indulgent brute: all that sudden wealth is going straight to your bottom...

(I find the chairs fine, for an hour or two of typing; there are more comfy ones upstairs, in the library proper. There will be more photos later...)

Thank you. I had the idea it was a very select pub (a silent area - hey, what do I know?). But, if it is a library, why is it called the Lit & Phil? If these are inane questions, you are welcome to distract me with more cat pictures. The place is very beautiful.

It is more properly the Literary and Philosophical Society of Newcastle upon Tyne. There's a brief overview of its history here (http://www.litandphil.org.uk/html_pages/LP_history.html), but essentially it started as a discussion group a couple of hundred years back, became a club with premises, developed a book collection... Like that. Evolution. We do still have a programme of learned lectures and indeed discussion groups, but essentially these days it's a library.

Are there hell. There are highly trained and intelligent staff who view me as a kind of pet, I think; they call me Chaz, on the whole. And let me do things I'm not really supposed to, and (I am sure) roll their eyes and laugh quietly behind my back.

Better than that they should laugh to your face, yes/no? It sounds wonderful. Have some congratulations to go with your good fortune. :) (envy envy envy)
