I suppose that was one way to read Anathem. And the memoirs of Catherine the Great, and Ink and Steel, and Tom Tackles the Chalet School, and...

Not sure I'd recommend it, though. I not only missed the election party, I missed the whole election! (I had been totally looking forward to TV coverage all night long; I like election specials. But I dislike and resent private companies making profit from the loneliness and isolation of hospital patients, so I was boycotting the pay-as-you-go TV/internet thing, and practising total asceticism and/or indulgence: no newspapers, even, just books. Good books are ... oh, you know. Better.)

Anyway. Am back. Thank you, thank you all for wishes &c. I may have more to say later, but I'm really not supposed to be typing for another week, and my thumb is starting to hurt already, so...

"Back away from the keyboard, Brenchley. Put your hand in the air and back away."

*backs away*

Good to see you back and hope you are recovered soon. It makes me smile that both the memoirs of Catherine the Great and Anathem are also on my inpile, though I do not see the right mindset for either arriving in the immediate future.

Umm. Actually, in retrospect? Interesting reads though both of them are - I do not recommend my method of approach. Treat all broken bottles with extreme caution, and be patient. The books will wait... (Tho' Anathem is well worth the time, once you find the mindset. Three days'-worth of reading and thinking: invaluable...)

Better, yay! He's on meds, they're noticeably starting to work, and he's (slowly slowly!) starting to gain significant weight again. Of course, he hates the meds...but all in all, we're starting to let out sighs of relief.

And thanks for thinking to ask even while you're going through your own recovery.

All - whimper

All

sigh

Next time in the UK you can expect me with either a big bag to borrow them or a bag of apple to sit and eat while I read them...

I have about half or less I guess.

To be clear: probably half my "all" are paperback reprints, rather than the proper original hardcovers. But, yup, all the texts are here.

So, yup, by all means come and read. Bring apples, if apples are your thing; I shall provide dietary variety. And introduce you to Joanna Lloyd, most likely, while you're here... (The incident with the parsnips is still the funniest thing I have ever read in girls' school stories. I am a Chalet School fanatic, but still prepared to acknowledge quality outside...)

I have about 3 hardbacks and 3/4 modern reprints- the rest are the original reprint paperbacks with varying degrees of torn covers and split bindings. I am addicted - I want to visit the places mentioned and hole up inside the stories when RL gets too much.

Mostly I have only read a handful of school stories outside of the chalet school. I got addicted to them early on and only a few others every got through!

I thought you probably had all of them; I just wasn't convinced anyone would have thought to bring them to you.

I look forward to discussing The Stratford Man with you.

Also, Ann Cleeves has been asking after you, and promises to e-mail.

I'm glad you have kept your thumb. Thumbs and the ability to accessorize are what sets us about from the monkeys after all.

Have a good recuperation. Stay away from sharp things!

Welcome back. You read Anathem in hospital? Seriously? How fast do you read? I just saw it for the first time in a bookshop today. It's nearly as big as my unabridged dictionary.

Anyways, I hope you heal up quickly and can get back to the keyboard/cooking etc. soon!

I am very glad you're back. Only REAL WRITERS can produce elegant, brave, witty bon-mot jottings on exactly what it's like to get septicaemia. Don't think we don't know that it really hurts.

So glad to see your phosphors. I've been thinking of you, trying not to imagine Dire Things.

I recently finished Ink and Steel, quickly followed by Hell and Earth. They're really one book, and stand much better together.
