Grr. Started the working day by deleting half of yesterday. I hate doing that. When a book's finished, I love to cut, because that always feels like progress; but at this stage, when all I want to do is get to the end, it's .. what's the opposite of progress, in this context? "Regress" doesn't feel right...

Anyway: I gazed upon my work and saw that it was crap, and so deleted it. And then wrote one new page and drank coffee and went to the Lit & Phil, for the first time this week - and they had taken all the tables out of the Silence Room! Presumably for some special meeting or other, to the Greater Inconvenience of Members, particularly me. I ended up scrunched in a corner with a feeble excuse for a coffee-table, and was not happy.

Wrote a couple of pages none the less, and then made my way home thorough shops thorough rain, over slush over ice. None of it was nice, except the shopping.

Soup now. Soup and a sammich, because I can. Because I am still losing weight, tho' not noticeably eating any less. Odd.

Some special meeting or other...

That could be the launch of The Silence Room by Sean O'Brien, though that is not happening till next Wednesday: Which is what makes this particular book launch all the more special, as the library in question is the self same Lit & Phil, and the eponymous Silence Room the venue for this unique reading.

It better bloody not be. There will be shoutings. (No, no, not in the Silence Room, obviously...)

There was a lot of Jovial Converse in the big meeting-room downstairs; I suspect all the tables went in there. In which case I am hoping to find them back again by tomorrow morning, or - well. Shoutings.

Not so much regressing as rewinding, I think.
Weight loss like that is a bit worrying. Have you made enquiries about this with your GP?

Not at this stage, no. A GP friend of mine did eye me beadily and ask how I proposed to put it back on again, but I reckon I can live without it. All I'm losing at the moment is middle-aged accretion, which I really don't need.

Hmm. Some more beadiness from here.

To quote pal Gill, the red-headed journo you met hereabouts, who is quoting in turn one of her first editors in London - 'don't get it right, get it written!'

She says this to me when I'm at the penultimate-chapter-totally-losing-confidence-in-the-opus stage. I find it helps.
