So I plugged everything in to the old computer (eventually, with much digging around for keyboard plugs that would fit, etc) - and got a sequence of fatal errors when I tried to boot Linux, and remembered that the last few times I used it I had to run fsdisk and fix stuff manually (eek!).
So got out of there and tried Windows. Which would boot fine, if you like that sort of thing. Which, as we know, I don't. Also, I couldn't make it look usable: maybe the box is so old it can't sustain the monitor's refresh rates, or something? I dunno, but it was just nasty to my eyes. And I tried a couple of Linux Live CDs, but neither of them would run, so I got the hell out of there and am back on the trusty LHP. Which, as we know, looks lovely.
It may not be for too long; the nice men promised to call me tomorrow. I have thoroughly scared myself by googling (so many people reporting this as an unfixable problem, the flashing amber light of doom), so am going to stop now. And drink wine and read Patrick O'Brian, and then maybe watch a double bill of Bourne movies...
