It's astonishing, truly astonishing how quickly half a litre of good olive oil can be slurped up by an old and unpleasant carpet. No, it is, truly. You'd be astonished. I'd barely begun to clear up the broken glass before it was all gone, leaving only a deadly slick on what should be pure friction.

Vote of thanks to Barry, for revealing this unto us.

Without science-cat, there would be only ignorance.

I shoulda tossed the carpet when I moved in thirteen years ago. Before I had built all the bookshelves and unpacked all the books. Now? Oh, lor'. I go pale even thinking about it. As with every other room, every other carpet in the house. Sometimes I dream of a windfall, whereby I can move self and cats somewhere else for six months while I put everything into storage, rip out all the carpets and all the wallpaper, have the kitchen and the bathroom totally remade, then redecorate throughout and have a whole new house to move back in to. Back into which to move, I beg your pardon.

What a tragic loss! If only you'd spilled it somewhere useful, like all over the cats or your head, where it could at least work as conditioner.

Is this effect observable with less good olive oil? Or, indeed, any other oil at all? Inquiring minds, &c...

I would point out, however, that the venerable old blind cat does get bothered a LOT by the young bouncy non-blind cats.

Just be thankful it wasn't anchovy-flavoured. I managed to smash a jar of anchovies in olive oil on the kitchen floor a couple of months ago and was much hampered in the cleaning up by small cat slurping down oil, anchovies and broken glass indiscriminately. No, broken glass doesn't appear to affect cats' insides, why do you ask?
