If there was ever an afternoon/evening on which to lose one's whole internet connection?

This probably wasn't it.

Still, back up now, apparently...

They are evil and out to get us.
Hope it behaves for here on.

Wouldn't be Virgin Media, by any chance? Recently we have kept being disconnected for fairly short periods, especially at peak times, in the evenings. However, it hasn't gone off for a whole evening -- yet.

Yup, Virgin Media indeed. It was off all afternoon and half the evening, and I found it ... amazingly disruptive. Like a power-cut: there just seemed to be nothing I could do, nothing I could settle to. I nearly fled the house.

But this is the first time in however-many years that I've had a problem (I was an early adopter with Virgin, back when they first established a dial-up ISP), and by the time I noticed it they already had a status report on the phone line and engineers out, so I'm not grumbling yet.

We had no complaints with Virgin Media until the last few weeks, when the connection kept dropping in the evening, as I said. I wondered if our modem was getting a bit elderly, but it turns out other people in the East Midlands have been having similar problems, including at least one of our neighbours. I hope Virgin get their act together soon.

I do know how you feel: our business depends on a reliable internet connection, which is why we've gone with BT Business. Not that they won't fail, but they react faster if something goes wrong.

Incidentally, you may be unhappy with Virgin Media, but the far too many of the clients who moved to TalkTalk ended up regretting it.

Actually, I'm not unhappy with Virgin; this is the first significant failure of service that I remember, all through more years than I remember. I know other people tell other stories, but I can only tell my own...

Every broadband service is going to fail sometime, sooner or later, and it's what they do next that's important.
