I have mentioned several times how big & heavy my printer is (it's one of these, since you ask). Robust would be another word for it, I reckon.

However. How many times will even the most robust of printers stand up to having a five-kilo weight fall upon it from a great height?

Even a furry five-kilo weight?

(It serves as a stepping-stone for Barry, on his way to and from the top of the shelves; and he's not exactly light-footed as he comes down, and I really, really wish he wouldn't, but, y'know. Cats.)

And now I should really stop noodling with LJ and, y'know, do something.

Don't wanna.

Simple suggestion? Put a thin rigid something-or-other on top of the printer -- something like a tea tray. Or maybe one of those bean bag/lap tray things IKEA sell for three quid. Ideally add some blu-tac to stop it slipping sidewards when Barry lands on it. The idea is that it'll distribute his weight across the entire upper surface of the printer when he jumps on it, rather than concentrating it on paw-point. When you need to print, you can take it off temporarily.

Sound workable?

(I think it's probably easier to cat-proof the printer than printer-train the cat ...)

Well, our digi-box and video have both survived many years of being thumped down on by Ish (5.6 k), and Horus (5.8 k) as well as Moon, who is a featherweight of around 2.5 k. But Charlie's idea is a good one.

Ah, my digibox just gets sat on. Lots. (Warm bottoms!) Oh, and knocked off the TV sometimes by enthusiastic leapings.

That was how I ended up with a new flatscreen tv, finally -- Pandora liked to sleep on top of it (the tv was an old one, and wide enough to put the box on top). One evening she woke up, stretched the way cats do -- and down came baby, box, and all, tearing the cable right out of the tv in a way that was not repairable.

She now sleeps on top of the printer, to ensure it is always clogged with fur.

Okay. That's a brute - and unlikely to be foisted off a high shelf by a cat.

Ba ha ha - what am I saying - tell me that your two never ever *ever* have wrassled behind something with enthusiastic heaving and hoeing and bracing of feet on the wall while stetching backward and bracing of backs on the big brutey thing. Never. Not once. Not at all. Oh, no.

My suggestion is to put something loose and noisy on it so that footing is treacherous and likely to spring up sideways and smack the cat on the butt on the way down. Okay, no, that won't work either. Sorry.
