(This, you will understand, is my latest gesture towards that whole trying-not-to-think-about-stuff-that-scares-me schtick. Plus more painting, other cooking, mindless manuscript drudgery &c. Sometimes it works, a bit.)
(Speaking of mindless manuscript drudgery, is there a one-button global change trick out there for converting a manuscript from common quotes to smart quotes? I can do it in four passes - change all double quotes to righthand double quotes, then change tab-righthandquote to tab-lefthandquote, then space-righthandquote ditto ditto, and then smarten the apostrophes - but I still have to check the whole MS for the occasional eccentric. There really should be a smarten-the-whole-shebang-thanks button. And there may be one, but I do not know it. In any word processor, any OS.)
