By 9.30 this morning the bread was baked and I had started shelving. Sorting and shelving: the cookery books are going into a sensible order, or I'll know the reason why. Actually, of course, I'll be the reason why: but their order is going to make sense to me, which is all that matters.
Also today, acting under instruction, I am submitting a story to Asimov's. Online submission, yay. So I was reading their instructions, and when they talked about standard manuscript format I clicked the link through to Shunn's guide because I'm still not confident about this (I come as you know from another generation, as well as another country; no one ever asked me for anything more than double-spacing on one side of the paper only. The prescriptiveness of current editorial practice boggles my mind rather). And I was reading through it, and reached the point where he says "If you belong to a professional writing organization, you may list your membership beneath this information, but only if it is relevant. If you belong to the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, for instance, you would want to mention that when submitting to Asimov's" - and I thought, really? It would never have occurred to me. And then I thought, there's no point mentioning it unless it makes a difference; so either Shunn is misinformed or else an author's SFWA membership adds perceptibly to the chances of a story's being accepted at Asimov's. And then I thought, um. Perhaps I should join SFWA?
I dunno, people. I don't actually want this to be true, but it well may be. Is it known, is it acknowledged? Or is it a calumny, or a rumour, or...?
