The Second Elle Cookbook. I have no idea how it came to be on my shelves; I have no memory of ever having read it, let alone used it. I regarded it now with misgivings. Grave misgivings. And flicked it open, half-returning to that notion of passing a few books on - and found myself reading a recipe for calves' brains and cucumber vol-au-vents.
