So I may possibly have been singing "Good King Wenceslas" all the way - I am very fond of the page-boy, treading in his master's steps, where the snow lay dinted - but I made it to the Lit & Phil. And on the way saw only one aaargh-skid-crunch accidental coming together of cars, and one frozen breakdown of a car, and one moron driving on ice in snow around a steep corner while speaking on his hand-held mobile phone. I watched with equanimity, and anticipate that he will become another statistic soon enough.

Meanwhile, that age-old quandary: is it better to wear many layers and be warm enough on the way in and thus too hot once you get here, or is it better to shiver on the road and be comfortable on arrival? (And yes, I know that the principle of layers is that they can be removed at will: but these hi-tech days, the relevant layers are thermals, and hence underneath. I am hot now, and no: not stripping down to my smalls.) (And yes, the whole point and purpose of this paragraph is indeed to allow me to use the word "smalls", which I have always adored. There's a bit in Bennett's "The Madness of George III" where he speaks of "majesty in his smallclothes", which is just unforgettably lovely.)
