This, on the other hand, is a surprise. Three days ago, I thought I was broken. It was Saturday, better half of the week behind me, and I'd only written 4000 words since the last round-up. Granted that I had also finished and posted off the copy-edit, and granted that I had also been away Thursday into Friday, and even so; I really did think I'd broken.

Happily, I had a good weekend and a better Monday, and even this morning has been good. Still not up to peak flow (a very potent term, to those of us with asthma and more doctors' appointments today), but I am not disgraced:

I suppose I should swap them to a different colour, now that we're over-budget, but nah.

I had hoped to finish by the end of this month; that's twelve hours away now, and again, nah. On the other hand, being so decidedly over-budget on both counts, I have at least exceeded expectations on the supply side.

On the other other hand, I still have to write one confrontation and another confrontation and a resolution and a twist; we could go a long way over budget, longer even than I'd budgeted for. Thing is, all this week's words weren't in the budget. It's that thing about not hanging a gun on the wall unless you mean to use it; here I am, novel with a river running through it, got to do something with the river, haven't I? So our journey has been enlivened with an Exciting Adventure on the Water; I have broken a lock, and told the appalling truth about Morris-men.

David, are you finished yet?

Well, I for one think that you've done an amazing amount, Chaz. Congratulations! I'm so looking forward to reading it when it is done. And I definitely want to know that appalling truth about Morris-men. It's something to do with the bladder and the handkerchiefs isn't it?

I'll be putting my monthly wordcount up after lunch, which I am feeling reasonably happy about. Obviously not as good as yours and David's has been, but I think it's going to prove quite satisfactory for me anyway.

By the way, what is the book actually called? I don't think you have named it on here yet and I can't for the life of me remember if you've told me elsewhere.

Ah, now. I have a terrible feeling that I made a decision not to say, on the grounds that (a) it's really so wonderfully clever I don't want to be bragging it about in advance of any (putative) publication; and (b) I'm expecting to publish under a pseudonym, if at all, so I didn't really want it allied to my own name too early, because thuswise would one abnegate all the advantages of pseudonymity.

E-mail me privately, and I'll tell you. And you will grin.

Please excuse me the conceit of a gold-coloured bar. The only winner here is literature, by God!

Finished this morning. Well, not really, because it needs going over with a fine tooth-comb, if I can find mine, but for all intents and purposes, yes. The story is told.

Still, you've done more than me, Chaz. If only you hadn't shifted your own goal posts...

But thank you, sirrah. It has been a well-fought challenge between gentlemen.

Yay! And brava! And so on. I've never been more pleased to have lost, and you are absolutely excused the gold bar. I shall do the same myself, as and eventually when.

Meantime, pop the cork on something fizzy, and we shall drink a draught to a draft. Yee-haw!

If you look for a fine-tooth comb you may have more success, as they actually exist.
Pedantically yours ...

No, I'm sure I have a comb for the dandying up of teeth around here somewhere. And it's a particularly fine example.

Here indeed is a picture of a tooth comb (http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/resources/anatomical_images/family_pages/primates/toothcomb.jpg/view.html), and a fine example it is too...

Over budget and still a twist to come! But I still haven't a chance of catching you up. Well done for the wordage. I've got my daily totals up, but still sadly running in place after the elusive 60% mark. And now [Unknown site tag] has finished, and the end of the month has come, I'll do my keyboard tapping without the weekly updates.
