Eight days ago, I was delivered of a novel. Yesterday, I was in receipt of the payment due, and my agent had a chat with my editor about the book. Today, I am in receipt of an edit letter.

This really is quite 'straordinary.

Kate says: "I have now read House of Doors, which I found a wonderfully
atmospheric, unusual and hauntingly lyrical read; the novel's emotional and
psychological depth made all the more poignant and chilling by turn as a
result of your vivid and sensual prose style. As it leads inexorably to its
tense and shocking climax, the plot is peppered throughout with such
hauntingly vivid images that they will linger in my mind for a long time to
come."

Which we take, of course, with a pinch of salt - she's obliged to say something nice to start with - but we'll take it none the less.

Her next paragraph begins "Having said that," and goes on to say that the first half is painfully slow, she's baffled and/or irritated by my obliquity about a Really Important Event, and the lead character's name changes at random intervals. Hey-ho.

In other news, I've just remembered what I should be doing now. It's lunchtime; aren't I supposed to eat something? I had forgot that.
