I fixed the phone. Well, I let the troublous handset run down its power to nothing overnight and then reboot as it recharged, which broke the feedback loop and fixed it.

Please be aware that I still hate phonecalls, and this is not an open invitation to make them. But I am again able - though reluctant - to receive.
