At least, in Windows it's alive. We can haz internets, thanks to a fine little mini-USB.

A wiser man than I would probably have done more research, come back and checked manufacturers and model numbers and so forth, before plunging. But Fry's is actually quite a long walk from here, and I didn't want to be back-and-forth; and besides, I got rushed in the store. There is this thing in US big-box stores, where nice polite staffpersons keep coming up and asking how you're doing and can they help at all. Which is a fine thing in itself, and I don't mind deflecting them - or indeed saying yes please, if I'm stuck. But this particular boy said something that I didn't quite understand, and led me to a till and was entering my details before I quite knew what was going on, and not quite actually selling the goods to me but scanning them nonetheless and printing out a sheet of paper with their details on that said "Take this to the front desk to complete your purchase" and by then, yeah, I felt committed.

Which wouldn't matter - this was the thing I wanted, and it clearly works - but my next step is Linux, and even Windows didn't recognise this particular USB adapter without the CD that came with it, so the chances of Ubuntu handling it well are ... well. Not so good, perhaps. We'll see. After lunch, perhaps. One thing at a time.

In the meantime, US keyboards are also odd. It's not just that they have a couple of important keys in the wrong place; it is also that the enter key is smaller than I'm used to, and apparently I used to hit the top of it. So I keep getting a slash instead. (What's the slash doing up there? It ought to be cater-corner to where it is...)

Also also, either this desk is higher than my previous or else this chair is lower. Or possibly both. I feel not quite big enough, somehow...
